ZEP

Music is created either to be understood by our hearts or experienced in our bodies. This bodily reaction is where Zep fits in, as a multitalented artist who not only sings, raps and plays the keyboard, bass and drums, but also works as a DJ and producer.

Native to Rotterdam, Zep has always kept music close to him. His father, Bazz Barnasconi, was the lead singer of the alternative rock band VanKatoen, which, as expected, was a crucial factor in his musical training.

His musical career is marked by the roughest electronics and the most experimental hip-hop. His mixes include every kind of sound, and, especially, he shows his skills by combining them in a way that only someone with this talent can achieve. His songs are characterised by distortions, echoes, tinned sounds and rhythmic beats, meant to be listened to at full blast to appreciate each note and each vibration.

Everything from this artist is chaotic, from his histrionic performances to, obviously, his music in its entirety. The lyrics of his pieces are the least engaging aspect when compared with the sound; that’s why, in each track, the detailing preference during the creative process is so transparent. Despite this, they are not exempt from transmitting a message. For example, in the case of his song NOBODY, Zep emphasises the distinctiveness of being oneself and the fact that our oddities make us unique.

“This song is a personal reflection of the past, leading to self-acceptance. It deals with the learning process of embracing personal parts of myself that used to make me feel vulnerable. I needed to assume that I am tall, bald, that sometimes I am not financially stable and that I had to overcome the loss of my mother. I have decided to celebrate rather than hide my reality. There’s NOBODY like me, like you. I hope that this song works as a reminder that your differences are, in fact, your strengths. Embrace your ‘oddity’; this is your advantage.”
