JFDR

Passion for music runs in her family; after all, with her father being a composer, it was inevitable that Jófríður Ákadóttir would develop an interest in the field.

This interest had been developing since her childhood. During this time, she would write and perform musicals with her twin sister for the rest of her family. She already had her own band at the age of 14: Pascal Pinon, characterised by an intimate folk sound heavily influenced by artists like Sinéad O’Connor and Björk.

As a teenager, she had already entered the music scene in Reykjavík as part of bands like Samaris, characterised by their focus on synthesisers and the addition of Icelandic poems from the 19th century to their lyrics. She was also part of bands like Gangly and P2X.

Her first steps as a solo artist came with her debut album Brazil in 2016, under the alias JFDR. This personal project is marked by slow rhythms inherited from her former bands. Jófríður’s subtle voice transforms her songs into an ethereal, almost ancestral experience, able to transport the listener to the inhospitable landscapes of Iceland, her native country.

What makes an artist interesting is the link from them to the universe (…). If there’s truth and fearlessness, then you will be in alignment with yourself through your music. If you can look it in the eye, then it comes through.”
