SHARON VAN ETTEN

New Jersey has been a bastion of US rock and the birthplace of iconic artists such as Frank Sinatra and legendary bands like Bon Jovi or My Chemical Romance. However, it has also produced artists who, although less widely known, are no less talented. Sharon Van Etten is a clear example. She is a singer-songwriter with a long career in music who seems to be finally getting the recognition she deserves.

Her journey into music began when she was just a child. Back then, she sang in her hometown choir in Belleville while also drawing on the local music scene: doo-wop, rhythm & blues, Jersey sound, bluegrass, rock… However, it was not until she moved to Tennessee to study that she began performing her own concerts. It was then that she came into contact with a new range of musical genres.

The truth is that Van Etten has moved easily within the wide spectrum of alternative rock without losing that introspective quality that characterises her. On one end of this spectrum we can find songs like “Seventeen”, an ode to adolescence with a slight pop sound that evokes that nostalgic stage of life. On the other end, we have tracks like the ones from her latest album with her band, Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory, probably the most rock-oriented album of her career.

For Sharon, making music was never about being relevant at all costs. She understands how the music industry works nowadays, where immediacy reigns, but she does not feel pressured when letting her creativity flow; she takes her time to experiment and create.

“I like writing with other people (…) I think it’s always good to experiment with others and try new things. In the end, you create things depending on who you surround yourself with.”
