BLOOD ORANGE

Dev Hynes is the man behind the pseudonym Blood Orange, a British singer, producer and musician whose trajectory dates back to the early 2000s, when he was part of a punk band called Test Icicles. However, his career as Blood Orange began in 2011 with his debut album Coastal Grooves.

Blood Orange does not remain within a single music genre, but rather flows between them with remarkable ease, linking sounds with an astounding skill. Nevertheless, where he truly excels is in R&B, with slow rhythms, a melodic voice and deep and introspective lyrics. All of these elements are present in his latest album, Essex Honey, its songs bound together by the grief experienced by the artist after his mother’s passing in 2023. He also pays homage to his youth in Ilford, located in the ceremonial county of Essex, which the album’s title references.

His work has made its way to the big screen on several occasions. One example is “Champagne Coast” in the film Palo Alto, directed by Gina Coppola. This song evokes the atmosphere of an intense and complex romance, not only through its lyrics, but also through its melancholic backing vocals and the passion always emanating from Hynes’s voice. A more recent example is “Uncle ACE”, a more sensual song, with a suggestive guitar riff, an occasional saxophone and a clarinet that helps build the tension in one of the most discussed moments of the 2024 film Challengers.
