Music evolves, mutates, and, as in every cultural phenomenon, it reinvents itself. Popular music, or, in short, pop, is one of the styles that has experienced more changes throughout its existence,giving way to a wide range of subgenres. The genre bedroom pop emerges among those labels that try to define concrete sounds, a minimalist type of music created with scarce resources from a room’s intimacy.
Arlo Parks’ proposal precisely fits in that sensitivity: the simple melodies, soft distortions and smoothvoice of the singer are the perfect match to create a warm and cosy atmosphere and so as to make the listener feel like home no matter where they are listening.
She’s recently launched her latest single, a three-song set inspired by pirate radio beats that evoke hedonism and blend together queer nightlife with clubbing vibes. On the one hand, Get Go, a piece that explores one’s identity, love and stepping into the dancefloor as a solace and a therapeutic way out to fight back against unrequited love, getting carried away by music and dancing. The second track, Heaven, renders those idyllic moments that we wish to freeze in time and stay forever. Last but not least, 2SIDED reflects the longing for this special person to return your love at some point at night.
The artist’s exact words: “We don’t have most of these stories anymore… There isn’t that much imagery and, in most cases, what we have left are only fragments of these stories. But there always seem to be DIY parties in non-normative spaces. And I like to think that, from a general perspective, people still keep alive the spirit of these spaces.”
